    • Manuel Noriega, ex-Panamanian military dictator ousted by a US invasion, died at age 83.

  • Afghanistan: Massive bombing strikes diplomatic heart of Kabul.
    • A massive blast tore through the diplomatic quarter of the Afghan capital of Kabul killing at least 80 people, underlining the fragility of the country as it buckles under a wave of rebel attacks.
    • The attack struck close to the German embassy in Zanbaq Square, with civilians said to be the main casualties.
    • In addition to the fatalities, 300 others were injured.
    • It was not clear whether the embassy had been specifically targeted.
    • The German foreign office said one of its embassy security guards was killed and some staff members were injured but all remaining staff was accounted for.
